FAQ
Questions, answered.
The things students, parents and schools ask us most, most important first. Don’t see yours? Ask us.
What is Got a Seat?
Got a Seat? helps students at the same school get home for breaks together. Drivers post their open seats, riders say where they’re headed and when, and we match people going the same way. Your school’s shuttles to stations and airports are on the same board, so every way home is in one place.
Each school has its own private board at its own address, such as yourschool.gotaseat.com, and only students from that school can see it.
Is it safe? Who can see my information?
Everyone on your school’s board signed in with a school email address, so you’re only ever matched with people from your school. Before a match, other students see the general area you’re leaving from and heading to (“Philadelphia area”), never your address. Pickup details and anything you share in messages are only visible after you both confirm.
You can message in the app without handing out your number, block anyone, and report a trip, message or person. Reports go to staff at your school, who can suspend accounts. Riders rate drivers after each trip.
School email confirms someone is a student. It isn’t a background check, and we don’t inspect drivers’ licenses, insurance or cars, so use your own judgment, and you never have to get in a car that doesn’t feel right. See our privacy policy for the details.
How much does it cost?
Driving is always free. Posting your seats, confirming riders and messaging about your drive cost nothing.
Riders pay a monthly subscription to post a ride request, confirm a booking and message drivers. Anyone signed in can browse rides and shuttles for free. You’ll see the price before you subscribe, and you can cancel any time.
Separately, a driver can suggest a share of gas and tolls. You pay that to the driver directly; it doesn’t go through Got a Seat?.
Is Got a Seat? at my school?
We’re starting with a small number of pilot schools, and each one gets its own address. If your school uses Got a Seat?, you’ll hear about it from your school or classmates.
If it isn’t at your school yet and you’d like it to be, tell us. Hearing from students helps us decide where to go next.
How does paying the driver work?
Drivers can show a suggested gas-and-toll share on their ride. If you agree to it, you pay the driver directly, however the two of you prefer. Got a Seat? doesn’t collect, hold or guarantee these payments.
Drivers can only ask for a fair share of what the trip actually costs. Got a Seat? is for students splitting trips they were taking anyway, not for driving as a business.
What if something goes wrong on a trip?
In an emergency, call 911 first. Got a Seat? isn’t an emergency service.
For anything else, from a no-show to someone asking for more money than they posted, report it in the app. Reports go to your school’s staff and to us. You can also block the person so they can’t see your trips or message you again.
What happens if my driver or rider cancels?
You’ll get an email, and your trip goes back on the board so you can find another match. Plans change, but please cancel in the app as early as you can so the other person has time to make other arrangements.
How do I sign in?
Go to your school’s Got a Seat? address and enter your school email. We’ll send you a sign-in link and a 6-digit code. Use either one. There’s no password to remember.
Is Got a Seat? a rideshare company? Who insures the ride?
No. We introduce students to each other; we don’t drive, employ drivers, own cars or set fares. Drivers are students using their own cars, and their own auto insurance covers their trips. If you drive, check with your insurer that it covers passengers who share costs. Our terms explain who’s responsible for what.
Can I book my school’s shuttle?
Yes, if your school lists its break shuttles on Got a Seat?. You can reserve a seat on a bus to a station or airport, or join the waitlist when it’s full. The shuttle itself is run by your school, so its schedule and rules come from them.
Is there an app?
Got a Seat? works in any browser on your phone or computer today. An iPhone app is coming to the App Store, and Android will follow. One account works everywhere you sign in.
How long do you keep my trips?
Not long. Rides, bookings and the messages about them are deleted automatically a couple of weeks after each break ends (your school picks the exact number of days). We keep only totals, like how many rides you’ve driven. We never sell your information or show you ads.
I’m under 18. Can I use it?
You can sign in and browse rides and shuttles, but you can’t offer, request or book a ride yet. We’re working on a way for a parent or guardian to give permission.
I’m a parent. What should I know?
Your student only travels with other verified students from their own school, their address stays hidden until both sides confirm, and they can block and report anyone. Their school’s staff review reports. We’d still encourage your student to share their trip details with you before they go. Questions? Get in touch.
For schools
How do we bring Got a Seat? to our campus?
Get in touch and tell us about your campus and your next break. We set up your school’s private board, load your break dates, regions and travel hubs, and run it for you.
What does our IT team need to do?
Nothing to install or connect. Got a Seat? doesn’t integrate with your school’s systems: no single sign-on, no student directory feed. Students verify with their school email address, and your board runs at yourschool.gotaseat.com, hosted and maintained by us.
What do campus staff get?
Staff can see demand by region and day before booking buses, run shuttle sign-ups with waitlists, and review safety reports from one queue, with the power to suspend accounts.
How do you handle student data and FERPA?
We collect the minimum: a school email, a name, and trip details that are deleted after each break. Each school’s data is kept separate. When we run Got a Seat? under an agreement with your school, we act as a “school official” under FERPA and use student information only for the purposes in that agreement. Our privacy policy has the full picture.
